In the first seven seasons, Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez and his team at the Shetland Constabulary tackle mysterious crimes haunting their close knit island community. He is replaced by DI Ruth Calder from the eighth season following his departure. Now leading the Shetland investigatory team, she works with DI Alison "Tosh" McIntosh to solve baffling cases and pursue dangerous culprits.

There are nine seasons so far. The latest Shetland Season 9 has yet to premiere in Australia, although it is expected to drop on BritBox.
In March 2024, Shetland was officially renewed for a ninth and tenth series, so yes, Shetland is set to return for another season.
The stories are largely set on Shetland Islands, an archipelago in Scotland. The town of Lerwick is one of the main filming locations, the archipelago's capital.
Shetland is now a BritBox exclusive in Australia. In previous years, the series streamed on Foxtel via BBC First—and by extension, its streaming platforms BINGE and Foxtel Now. Shetland and other major BBC dramas moved to BritBox following BBC First's exit from Foxtel.
DI Jimmy Perez, played by Douglas Henshall, was Shetland's main character from Season 1 until Season 7. He was replaced by DI Ruth Calder, played by Ashley Jensen.
