Sacred Journeys is a six-part series highlighting some of the world’s most challenging religious pilgrimages. Each episode focuses on a different chapter of ancient history revealed through the personal stories of contemporary explorers who set out on the same profound journeys that people have taken for a thousand years or more. Pilgrimage is as vital today as it ever was. Last year, two hundred million people around the world set out to visit a shrine, temple, or other holy site. Sacred Journeys explores why today’s seekers travel many of the same routes, visit many of the same places, and perform many of the same rituals as people have performed for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. Pilgrims come from every walk of life, looking for healing or forgiveness, giving thanks for good fortune, seeking meaning, connecting with their cultural and religious roots, or seeking an encounter with the Divine.
