When Grantchester vicar Sidney Chambers is accused of a terrible crime, unmasking the real culprit sends shockwaves through the community. Walking back from a picnic with his friend Inspector Geordie Keating, he is arrested by DC Phil Wilkinson and accused of sexual assault. Harding Redmond is the source of the accusation, horrified at the claims made in the diary of his teenage daughter Abigail.

A Cambridge lecturer's fatal fall from the college spires draws Sidney and Geordie into a world of espionage and cover ups, where nothing and no-one is what they seem. Geordie calls on Sidney for help following the apparent suicide of Valentine Lyall at Sidney's old college. Lyall's wife Mya is consoled by Valentine's star pupil Kit Bartlett, who used to partake in daredevil climbs of the college buildings alongside his mentor.

When Theo Graham confesses to Sidney and Geordie that he attacked and killed his landlord Eric Whittaker, they rush to the boarding house and find the alleged victim alive and well, along with his teenage daughter Joan and her stepmother Vivian. Back at the station, despite his protestations that Eric will come after him, Geordie sends the young man on his way. Just hours later, Eric is killed in a hit and run as Sidney and Geordie look on.

As the trial of local teen Gary Bell approaches, Sidney and Geordie find themselves at loggerheads regarding his guilt. Sidney is asked by Reggie Lawson to perform an exorcism at his home and stable yards, convinced that the spirit of his dead wife Anna haunts the place. Believing this to be a husband's desperate grief, Sidney hopes his words have given Reggie some solace. That night, Geordie summons Sidney back - Reggie has hanged himself in the same spot as Anna.

When Geordie is found with a dead prisoner, Sidney leaps to his defence, but finds himself questioning whether he really knows Geordie as well as he thought.

With Sam missing, Sidney and Geordie are forced to investigate a crime together. Can they put their differences aside long enough to stop a murder being committed?
