One of the most-watched sitcoms of all time, Friends will be leaving Netflix Australia and Stan to move to a new service for exclusive streaming.
Premiering in 1994 and becoming one of television’s most popular comedies of all time, Friends is pretty much almost everyone’s go-to sitcom even up until now, over 20 years after the final Friends Season 10 aired. But one streaming service entering Australia is causing some sort of shake-up in the streaming landscape, including the availability of the beloved show.
Read on if you’re wondering where to watch Friends episodes now that the show is soon to leave Netflix and Stan.
Where is Friends streaming in Australia?
Friends TV show was a staple program on Netflix Australia for years, then on Stan where it was added after the show left BINGE and Foxtel in mid 2024.
For streaming Friends in Australia in 2025, every season will have a new home with Max entering Australia beginning 31 March. Fortunately, Max (Basic with Ads) is still included in your Foxtel subscription without additional costs so Foxtel customers can continue to access HBO shows and movies despite this change. The only change happening here is you’ll be able to access content using the Max app, instead of Foxtel’s designated channel.
To watch Friends online free, 10Play still offers Friends episodes from select seasons. As of this writing, here are the available seasons on 10Play: Friends Season 1, Friends Season 9, and Friends Season 10.
Why is Friends leaving Netflix Australia?
With the launch of Max, it has been expected that Warner Bros. Discovery will eventually move its content to its own streaming service, and that includes Friends. So Friends leaving Netflix Australia is mainly due to Max entering the country and the entertainment giant shelling out big bucks to acquire the rights to the program in the US. Of course, this deal extends to other markets.
Friends was originally supposed to leave Netflix Australia in 2024, but licensing rights were renewed for another year at the last minute, fortunately. But come April 2025, Friends will only be available on Max.
What is the Friends TV show about?
Six friends in Manhattan, New York City navigate careers, love, and friendship, sharing each other’s ups and downs at their go-to hangout coffeehouse, Central Perk. There’s Rachel Green, runaway bride who’s staying with high school pal Monica Geller while she figures out life.
Then there’s Monica, a talented chef who really likes things clean. Her brother, Ross Geller, is a paleontologist whose marriage just ended, so being newly single he’s trying to make things happen with Rachel. Chandler Bing is Ross’ college roommate, who now lives across the hall from Monica and Rachel with his actor roommate Joey Tribbiani. Joey loves sandwiches and acting. He would later become a soap opera star in Days of Our Lives.
Throughout its run, Friends won numerous awards, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for Friends Season 8. All six cast members also reunited for the HBO special Friends: The Reunion, including recurring stars like Larry Hankin’s Mr. Heckles, Tom Selleck’s Richard Burke, Elliott Gould’s Jack Geller, Christina Pickles’ Judy Geller, James Michael Tyler’s Gunther, and Maggie Wheeler’s Janice. Tyler sadly passed away months after the premiere of Friends: The Reunion.
