What is the plot of the Time (2021) TV series?

Created by Jimmy McGovern, who created hit dramas like The Lakes, The Street, and Accused, Time is an anthology series following the lives of inmates serving time in His Majesty’s Prison Service.

The first season revolves around Mark Cobden (Sean Bean); a husband, teacher, and father, who is sentenced to four years in jail after inadvertently murdering a man. Mark, consumed with remorse, accepts his sentence outright but is soon faced with the brutal reality of life on the inside.

The narrative also follows prison guard Eric McNally (Stephen Graham), who strives to protect those entrusted to his care, but discovers that his job is hard in a stressful and understaffed environment. As they struggle for survival, Mark and Eric must make some very difficult decisions.

The latest second series follows Orla (Jodie Whittaker), a single mother serving her first sentence. There, she meets Abi, a woman serving a life sentence and Kelsey, a pregnant heroin addict.

Arriving at Carlingford prison on the same day, their lives become intertwined in ways they didn’t see coming. With unforgettable performances from its lead cast, Time Season 2 offers a poignant portrayal of life inside a woman’s prison. Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley) also returns to reprise her role as prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell.
