After smashing numerous box-office records, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally hitting streaming this November. The new Super Mario Bros. film came thirty years after the release of the first live-action movie. For a long time, Nintendo has avoided licensing its rights for cinematic adaptations for fear that it won’t succeed, just like the past film adaptations.

But 2023 proved to be fruitful for the video game franchise, becoming the highest-grossing film based on a video game. It also became the second-highest-grossing film this year (coming after Barbie).

Teen Titans Go! creators Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed the 2023 movie, which features an ensemble voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Seth Rogen.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie preview

Mario and Luigi have finally opened their own plumbing business, that is despite their father’s lack of support and their former boss’ confidence that they’re not going to make it.

But this is only the beginning of their grand adventure.

Having seen a critical water main leak on the news, the plumber brothers decide to fix it. While working underground, they are sucked into a Warp Pipe, transporting them to another world: Mario arrives in Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi, on the other hand, gets sucked into the Dark Lands.

Navigating new territories that are beyond their grasp, the brothers’ strength and courage are further tested when Dark Lands’ ruler, the evil Koopa king Bowser, threatens to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.

To stop his villainous schemes, the brothers, together with Princess Peach and the adorable residents of Mushroom Kingdom, must give it their all to save the world. Otherwise, Bowser takes over and that isn’t good.
