The Responder, a British police drama starring Martin Freeman returns for a second season and is set to screen in Australia this month.
Created by screenwriter Tony Schumacher, a former police officer, it follows a demoted investigator taking on a series of night shifts as a first responder. When his attempts to help a young drug addict earns the ire of a drug dealer, his already complex life goes into a nosedive.

In Season 1, we were introduced to first responder Chris Carson (Freeman), who, after being demoted from his position as an inspector, began working on night shifts with his rookie partner Rachel Hargreaves (Adelayo Adedayo).
A troubled cop still reeling from his past traumas and his present personal troubles, his internal conflicts make him someone who desires to do good, but also someone who’s capable of crossing lines if it means saving himself and those he cares about.
In the first season, Chris and Rachel had to save local drug addict Casey (Emily Fairn) from mid-level drug dealer Carl (Ian Hart). The more they got entangled in Carl’s dangerous affairs, all while trying to repair their fractured lives, the worse the repercussions were.
In Season 2, Chris and Kate’s worsening marriage prompts them to finally separate. Rachel, after surviving domestic abuse, still struggles to move forward. Despite their shattered selves, the duo is back as they attempt to resolve the alarming consequences of their actions in the first season.
But with Chris crossing one of Liverpool’s top drug dealers, it will be much harder for him to do good and play by the rules. Casey, who hasn’t managed to make the necessary changes required for her to survive, will continue to be a threat to herself and her ex-boyfriend Marco (Josh Finan). Her life is also still in danger with Carl’s wife Jodie (Faye McKeever) finding out the truth about her husband’s death.
The acclaimed police drama is written by Tony Schumacher, directed by Tim Mielants, Philip Barantini and Fien Troch, and produced by Rebecca Ferguson. Lead star Martin Freeman serves as executive producer alongside Laurence Bowen and Chris Carey.
