The Listeners is a new BBC One mystery thriller starring “Tales from the Loop” actress Rebecca Hall.
Based on Jordan Tannahill’s 2021 novel of the same name, The Listeners follows an English teacher constantly tormented by a mysterious humming noise that very few people can only hear.
The story is inspired by a phenomenon called The Hum, the auditory perception of a low-frequency humming with no clear source experienced by some people.

What is the plot of The Listeners?
The Listeners revolves around Claire (Rebecca Hall), an English teacher whose life slowly unravels after she begins hearing a humming sound. With her family and colleagues unable to hear the noise, the phenomenon disrupts her relationship with them, isolating herself from everyone else.
The humming remains a mystery with its source unknown and with no medical cause, unravelling Claire’s perception of people and things around her.

When she discovers one of her students can hear the same noise, they bond over their similar experience, later learning that there are others like them. Together, they become members of a support group meant for those who can hear the Hum, calling themselves “The Listeners”.
However, what started as a self-help group between people needing a sense of community over a shared experience becomes something unsettling and extreme.

The Listeners was written for television by the book’s author himself Jordan Tannahill and with all four episodes directed by Janicza Bravo.
It stars Rebecca Hall (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Tales from the Loop), Prasanna Puwanarajah (Line of Duty, The Crown), Amr Waked (Riviera, Ramy), Gayle Rankin (House of the Dragon, GLOW), Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise, September Says), Samuel Edward-Cook (Emmerdale, Better), and Ollie West (The Sparrow).
