The real-life story of the Von Erich brothers, their illustrious professional wrestling careers and the tragedies that turned their victories into ashes is the basis of A24’s new sports drama The Iron Claw.
A wrestling movie on the outside but is actually a tale of love and family at its core, it follows Kevin (Zac Efron) and Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), WCCW wrestlers who dominated the ring in the 1980s, alongside their brothers David (Harris Dickinson) and Mike (Stanley Simons).
Brought up to fight and win, the siblings have to live up to their father’s rigid expectations and deal with the brutal competition of professional wrestling, ultimately taking a toll on their own lives.

What is The Iron Claw based on?
The Iron Claw tells the story of the Von Erichs, legendary figures in professional wrestling with the Von Erich patriarch, Fritz (Holt McCallany), running the World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW).
A former professional wrestler himself, he strongly encouraged his sons to follow in his footsteps, hence full-fledged bringing the Von Erich brothers into the business and establishing the family’s wrestling dynasty.
Trained by their domineering father, the siblings make a name for themselves in the ring, defeating big names like Chris Adams, The Fabulous Freebirds, and Ric Flair. But their triumphs were overshadowed by seemingly non-stop tragedies that the family themselves believed to be a curse.
Most of the brothers saw tragic ends, but their legacy lives on. Kevin’s sons, Marshall and Ross, have also become wrestlers, as well as Kerry’s daughter, Lacey, until her retirement in 2010.
