Set in feudal Japan, Shogun follows John Blackthorne, the very first Englishman to set foot in the country after being shipwrecked. Suddenly thrust into a new land with a language and culture he doesn’t understand, the sailor finds himself redefining his truth and morality to survive in an unfamiliar land.

Blackthorne is based on real-life English sailor named Will Adams and his historical exploits.

What is the plot of Shōgun (2024 TV series)?

Set in 1600, Shogun follows three people whose lives and fates are intertwined: English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai).

Stranded in a country with unknown customs and language, Blackthorne submits to Japanese authority and bends his own definition of truth and freedom.

Toronaga, Lord of the Kwanto and president of the Council of Regents, must deal with his political rivals with absolute tenacity to secure his position, and Blackthorne’s arrival may just be the very thing he needs to tip the scales of power.

Then there’s Lady Mariko, a Christian noblewoman, brilliant and gifted but forever haunted by the actions of her father. She becomes the last of a disgraced family line. As a Catholic, she is torn between her new faith and her loyalty.

Her gift for languages led to her appointment as a translator between Blackthorne and the Japanese, a decision that changed all their lives and impacted the power struggle that’s been plaguing the country during one of the most crucial periods in Japanese history.

The new Shogun series is created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Main cast member Hiroyuki Sanada also serves as a producer alongside Eriko Miyagawa.
