Zac Efron and John Cena star in the new comedy about three longtime friends making up a non-existent friend called ‘Ricky Stanicky’. The idea is that whenever they’re in trouble, it’s mainly because of “Ricky”.
The thing is, they’ve invented him 25 years ago so when their respective spouses and partners become suspicious and demand they meet the “guy”, they decide to do something even more irreversibly foolish.

The upcoming comedy film has been in development since 2010 with James Franco, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jim Carrey initially involved to star as the titular character.
It was finalised in 2022 with Peter Farrelly announced to direct. By 2023, Amazon had acquired global rights to the movie. Finally, after over a decade, it premieres Thursday, 7 March 2024.

What is the plot of Ricky Stanicky?
Three childhood best friends Dean (Efron), Wes (Jermaine Fowler), and JT (Andrew Santino) pulled a prank gone wrong during their teens. To get out of trouble, they invented the fictional Ricky. Since then, their “other friend” has been their go-to saviour sort of, allowing them to get out of things unscathed.
Decades later and the trio still uses Ricky as an excuse for any mischief or for going to the World Series without their partners knowing. But 25 years is too long of a secret and so it’s really bound to get out, which it almost did when a family emergency prompted a search for “Ricky” to find out their whereabouts.
When almost caught in a lie, the only thing to do is tell the truth – or not. Clearly, these guys aren’t done with their crazy solutions because they actually decide to hire someone to bring the character to life. But that’s just the beginning of their wildest adventures they never saw coming.
Amazon’s new comedy film is directed by Peter Farrelly (Green Book), which he also co-wrote alongside Jeff Bushell, Brian Jarvis, James Lee Freeman, Pete Jones and Mike Cerrone.
