What is the documentary Ren Faire about?

The documentary series delves into the succession crisis currently taking place at the world’s largest Renaissance fair, the Texas Renaissance Festival. For half a century, its founder, known to his employees as King George, has been the festival’s undisputed leader. His reign, while done with iron fist, has made the festival the greatest of its kind not just in America but in the world.

But King George, now in his ‘80s, acknowledges it’s time to hang up the hat. With him vacating the throne, he needs to find someone who is capable of continuing the epic legacy that the original founder had established. The new grand responsibility will naturally fall to some of his longtime employees.

Vying for the “crown” are Jeff Baldwin, the General Manager, Louie Migliaccio, Lord of Corn, and Darla Smith, the Elephant Trainer. As every prospective “King” or “Queen” uses the ultimate trick up their sleeve to get the coveted crown, the Texas Renaissance Festival will be mired with a succession drama that gets outrageous at times. For starters, the employees competing for George’s throne imagine themselves in a real-life Game of Thrones

Directed by Lance Oppenheim, Ren Faire is co-created by Oppenheim & David Gauvey Herbert.
