What is the documentary No Other Land about?
Basel Adra is a Palestinian activist who documents his community, Masafer Yatta, a village on the West Bank, being gradually destroyed as Israeli soldiers occupy the lands. As homes are torn down and people are forcibly displaced, Basel shows resistance by recording his homeland’s destruction.
Amidst the chaos, he meets Israeli investigative journalist Yuval Abraham. They forge an unlikely bond, leading to the creation of this documentary. Basel and Yuval wrote and directed No Other Land, alongside Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor.

Filmed between 2019 and 2023, combined with videos taken over the course of 20 years, No Other Land shows early videos of Masafer Yatta and the beginning of mass expulsion when Basel was a child.
Fast forward to the present, every current footage of his homeland only paints a grimmer reality. But Basel, with the support of Yuval and the others, won’t give up just yet as they continue their activism.

Screened at multiple film festivals across the world, No Other Land was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, competing with other gripping docos Porcelain War and Black Box Diaries.
Slava Leontyev co-wrote and co-directed the documentary film alongside Brendan Bellomo. Aniela Sidorska and Paula DuPré Pesmen are also credited as writers.
Testament to its beauty and impact, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, competing with other gripping docos No Other Land and Black Box Diaries.
What happened to No Other Land filmmaker Hamdan Ballal?
Earlier in March, Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal received the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for No Other Land alongside Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, and Rachel Szor. Just weeks after this victory, it was reported that Ballal was beaten by Israeli settlers and soldiers, and detained for 20 hours.
While the Academy released a statement against “harming or suppressing artists for their work or their viewpoints”, Ballal was not addressed by name. In response, over 600 members of the Academy issued an open letter criticising the Academy’s lack of support. Signing the open letter were Joaquin Phoenix, Olivia Colman, Riz Ahmed, Emma Thompson, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and filmmaker Jonathan Glazer.
