What is the plot of Mary & George?
After the death of her husband, Mary Villiers is left penniless with four children to raise. Upon realising that her second son George has the potential to wield power and influence through his looks and charm, she somehow manages to send him to the French court to further his finesse and education.
When he returns, she deems him ready to join the English court.
All of Mary’s efforts to polish her son’s upbringing, however, isn’t for him to find a suitable wife; it’s to capture someone else’s attention, someone more powerful – the King of England.
Succeeding in their daring ambition to seduce the king, Mary and George find themselves richer, more influential, even untouchable as their family significantly moves up the ladder.
But with their nonstop scheming creating enemies along the way, will their newly-found status last forever?
The period drama is based on Benjamin Woolley’s non-fiction book “The King’s Assassin”. It’s created by D. C. Moore for television, with Oliver Hermanus, Alex Winckler, and Florian Cossen serving as directors.
The riveting series is actually based on a true story derived from King James’ affair with George Villiers, also present in Woolley’s book.
