The film, set in Texas in 1979, follows aspiring pornographic film actors and producers as they set up to shoot a movie in a rented farm guesthouse. In 1979, six people travel through Texas to film a pornographic film. Among them are aspiring pornographic actors Maxine Minx, Bobby-Lynne, and Jackson Hole; producer Wayne; director RJ; and RJ’s girlfriend. They wind up at an elderly couple’s farmhouse, where they intend to shoot their film, entitled The Farmer’s Daughters, and are granted permission to stay in their guesthouse.
Throughout the next few nights, the group faces bickering and infighting after several upsets during filmmaking. For one, RJ’s girlfriend asks to be in the movie, keen to change her reputation as a prude. Strange things start to happen and people begin to go missing, prompting the group to explore the farmhouse a little more, where they encounter horrific findings and threats from an unlikely killer.
While the film follows a classic slasher format, director Ti West has given a new element of suspense to the overly gory formula. Working alongside the studio who made terrifyingly suspenseful horrors like Hereditary, Ti West has created a truly horrifying masterpiece filled with drama.
