Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty is a sports series chronicling the remarkable lives of Los Angeles Lakers during a time when they had just ushered a new era in basketball. Based on the book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s” by Jeff Pearlman, the first season featured iconic NBA stars Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the Lakers’ 1980s Showtime era.

Despite facing controversies for the liberties it took to dramatise events, the series was well-received by critics and was a ratings hit, prompting for its second season renewal. With Season 2 dropping soon this year, find out how you can watch new episodes using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty preview

Los Angeles Lakers, one of the NBA’s most prominent teams, helped shape basketball to the sport it is today. And so, the ’80s Lakers team, who were widely known for their transition offence and their captivating on and off-court personalities, is the focus in the sports drama, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

Season 1 follows the Los Angeles Lakers and how they established themselves as the greatest basketball team in the 1980s. More importantly, it tells the story of a team coming together and winning its first championship. However, the first Lakers championship victory is nowhere near the end of their journey.

In Season 2, we’ll learn that what comes next is even harder as they deal with more challenges brought by their newfound fame. Continuing to explore the professional and personal lives of the Lakers in the ’80s, fans can expect more basketball drama with the new season covering just after the Finals in 1980 through 1984.

Basketball fans know this to be the period when that era’s greatest stars – Magic Johnson and Larry Bird – had their first professional rematch. With the new season featuring the rivalry between Johnson and Bird, we’ll also see more of the Lakers’ competitive stance with Boston Celtics.

Adam Mckay (The Big Short, Vice) serves as a co-writer and one of the executive producers. McKay also developed and co-created the show along with Jim Hecht and Max Borenstein. In addition to being co-creator, Jim Hecht is an executive producer with Jason Shuman, Scott Stephens and Rodney Barnes.
