A movie adaptation of Delia Owens’ best-selling novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, was theatrically released last year to great success. It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) as lead protagonist Catherine “Kya” Clark. Abandoned as a child, she learns how to live on her own in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina and becomes a naturalist in the process. Isolated from the rest of the town, people call her the “Marsh Girl”. But when the town’s hotshot quarterback is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect.

Where the Crawdads Sing preview
With her family leaving one by one, instigated by her abusive father, Kya raises herself and manages to live alone outside a small town in the marshes of the deep South. The local townspeople usually steer clear of her, calling her the “Marsh Girl” and spreading outrageous gossip about her.
So, when Chase Andrews, her former boyfriend and the town’s popular quarterback, is found dead in the marsh, Kya is instantly branded as the prime suspect for his death.
Tried for murder and further treated as an outcast by the townspeople, she is defended by her lawyer Tom Milton (David Strathairn), who sympathises with the young girl’s plight.
Delving into the case and the circumstances around Chase’s death, the events prior to her harrowing journey as she stands trial are revisited, giving us a clearer picture of the kind of life she has endured all these years.
Where the Crawdads Sing is directed by Olivia Newman and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. It became one of the most surprising box office hits of 2022.
