Brittany Murphy, best known for her roles in the teen movie classic Clueless, the musical drama film 8 Mile, and dozens of other Hollywood films, passed away at age 32. Over a decade later, her life and her sudden death will be the subject of the new HBO Max documentary series, What Happened, Brittany Murphy? Find out how to watch every episode as it airs in Australia with this guide.
What Happened, Brittany Murphy? TV series preview
In 2009, actress Brittany Murphy died in her Hollywood Hills home. A 911 call was made by her mother, Sharon Murphy, after Brittany Murphy suddenly collapsed on the morning of December 20, 2009. She had been having flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to her death. The actress was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Ed Winter, the coroner who handled Murphy’s case, concluded that the cause of her death was a combination of anemia, pneumonia, and prescription drugs.
In the documentary, both Winter and medical examiner Lisa Scheinin express the possibility that Murphy’s death could have been avoided if she had been taken to the hospital when she started falling ill. That is why much of the blame was laid on Simon Monjack, Brittany Murphy’s husband, because he allegedly refused to get her medical help. As conspiracy theories aggravate the actress’ untimely death, Murphy’s estranged father, Angelo Bertolotti, had claimed that her daughter had been actually poisoned.
What Happened, Brittany Murphy?, however, offers not much new details about the actress’ death. What it does is provide more information based on interviews on how Simon Monjack was an insidious presence in his wife’s life. It is revealed in the documentary that Monjack, a struggling screenwriter, took over Murphy’s personal and professional life, cutting her off from her friends as their relationship deepened and even controlling her finances. In an interview for the series, filmmaker Allison Burnett recalls meeting Monjack, who, at the time, lied about surviving terminal brain cancer. He also died of acute pneumonia and severe anemia on the same property five months later. The tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths have since been the subject of much speculation.
However, director Cynthia Hill wants the docuseries to focus on Brittany’s promising life, which was, unfortunately, overshadowed by the mysterious circumstances of her death. She expresses the intention behind the documentary is to celebrate Brittany’s talent and remind the public of the radiant star that she was. Hence, What Happened, Brittany Murphy? is presented in a straightforward narrative, starting with her acting aspirations that led to her move to Los Angeles with her mother.
In her early teens, she began landing small roles on such shows as Murphy Brown and Sister, Sister before gaining mainstream recognition in the 1995 film Clueless. While her Clueless fame was the break she had been hoping for, this also unleashed Hollywood’s dark side. After getting ruthless comments from agents and producers about her appearance, Brittany extremely changed her looks by dying her hair blonde and losing more weight despite her already petite frame.
Ultimately, she secured leading lady roles while also becoming a tabloid favourite during her relationship with actor Ashton Kutcher. After some time, her career started taking a downturn, booking fewer major roles amidst nasty rumours about her drug use and bizarre behaviour when filming. With this tangent, this Brittany Murphy documentary not only sheds light on her husband’s manipulation, it also explores how Hollywood, the media, and even the public, contributed to the internal struggles that largely characterised the remainder of her life before her tragic death.
What Happened, Brittany Murphy? is an HBO Max original that’s set to premiere this month.
