Steven Spielberg’s version of the classic West Side Story musical launched on select streaming services in Australia last March. It stars Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony and newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria. Acclaimed upon release, with some critics even deeming the 2021 revival better than the 1961 original West Side Story adaptation, find out how to watch West Side Story 2021 in this guide.

West Side Story 2021 movie preview
Development for the revival of the hit classic musical began in 2014. By 2017, screenwriter Tony Kushner had begun working on the screenplay and Steven Spielberg was tapped to direct the film the following year. Justin Peck was hired to choreograph, although the movie itself did not recreate the original choreography by Jerome Robbins.
A love story laced with complications and gang rivalry (the Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks), Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story continues to honor Tony and Maria’s forbidden love as an important core of musical theatre. This second feature-length adaptation of the musical combines essential elements of old-school musical showmanship and social issues that are still timely relevant.
West Side Story 2021 is also lauded for its song and dance sequences with one of the musical numbers, “Jet Song”, being a notable performance (the 1957 play won the Tony Award for Best Choreography). It features a talented cast – Ansel Elgort played Tony while Rachel Zegler, in her film debut, played Maria. Meanwhile, Schmigadoon! actress Ariana DeBose played Anita with David Alvarez playing Maria’s brother, Bernardo.
