Werewolf by Night is Marvel’s first holiday-themed special that’s based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Exploring the supernatural forces at work in the Marvel universe, it is a unique addition into the MCU, which is mostly known for its superheroes and extraterrestrial or magic-using supervillains.
With Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night, there’s a notable genre departure for Marvel – an intriguing venture that’s worth checking out. And seeing that it’s not often that we get a horror-themed special from them, it’s high time to delve into MCU’s monsters and monster hunters in Werewolf by Night. Find out how to watch the special as it drops on streaming TV in October, just in time for the Halloween season.
What’s in this Guide?
Werewolf by Night is Marvel preview
After their leader’s death, a secret group of monster hunters emerge on a dark and somber night to perform a strange and macabre memorial. The memorial involves every monster hunter present to participate in a mysterious and deadly competition to gain a powerful relic.
As it turns out, the hunt is also bound to bring a dangerous monster. One remarkable monster hunter in the group is Jack Russell, also known as Werewolf by Night, because he can’t control his transformations into werewolf form during three nights on a full moon.
Bringing in exemplary combat skills, he also knows his way around occult and supernatural forces. The character’s first appearance was in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2. Marvel’s upcoming TV special will mark his screen debut. He was created by Roy Thomas, Jeanie Thomas, Gerry Conway, and artist Mike Ploog.
It’s still unclear how Werewolf by Night will fit into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it’s worth noting that the original comic book series marked the debut of Moon Knight. In the comic books, Jack Russell also encountered other Marvel characters that included Ghost Rider, Morbius, and even Iron Man.
