Vengeance movie (2022) preview
Vengeance 2022: A darkly comic thriller about ajournalist and podcaster, Ben Manalowitz (played by B. J. Novak), who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with.
The story takes off when Ben gets a call from Ty Shaw (Boyd Holbrook), who lives in a small town five hours away from Abilene, to inform Ben that his girlfriend, Abby, has passed away.
The catch? Ben doesn’t have a girlfriend named Abby, but a quick check of his phone reveals that he did indeed hook up with aspiring singer Abby (Lio Tipton) a few times and then forgot about her.
Feeling guilty and curious, Ben decides to attend Abby’s funeral in her hometown and meets her grieving family, including her mother, Sharon (J. Smith-Cameron), her younger sisters Paris (Isabella Amara) and Kansas City (Dove Cameron), and her little brother El Stupido (Elli Abrams Beckel).
But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers that things aren’t as they seem. Granny reveals that Abby was a drug user and that Ty had lied to Ben to get closer to her supposed boyfriend. Mason, Abby’s best friend, shares that Abby used to speak in code, saying “1435” to express “I love you mucho”.
As Ben uncovers the truth behind Abby’s death, he finds himself questioning his own morals and values, which sets the stage for the dark comedy’s deeper themes of vengeance, justice, and morality, making for a thought-provoking experience.
Novak’s debut as a director proves to be a promising venture, going beyond his usual acting and writing expertise. Vengeance also fared well among film critics, garnering an 81% score in Rotten Tomatoes. And, being a dark comedy with a compelling mystery to intrigue spectators, chances are audiences will love it too.
