George Miller, best known for his work in the Mad Max franchise, brings us fantastical stories in Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. It follows a British scholar, who, after coming across an antique bottle, unleashes an ancient Djinn trapped inside. He offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom, which she rejects knowing wishes to be cautionary tales. Unrelenting, the djinn tells her stories about his past, setting the stage for an epic fantasy film that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Three Thousand Years of Longing preview
Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic fairly satisfied with her life, which is about to get wilder – she just doesn’t know it yet. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she encounters a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes. As tempting as it is, being a scholar of story and mythology gives her sufficient reason to doubt the djinn’s existence. And even if he were real, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes backfiring.
Certain about her decision to pass up the once in a lifetime chance to make her wishes come true, the djinn pleads his case by telling her stories about his extraordinary past. What follows are sublime stories of the djinn’s previous lives, inspiring Alithea to make a wish that shocks them both.
Written by Miller and Augusta Gore, the movie is based on the short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” by A. S. Byatt. Miller also serves as the producer for the film alongside Doug Mitchell.
