How to watch The Vow TV series in Australia

NXIVM, the now-defunct corporation that sex offender Keith Raniere founded and purported as a self-help organisation, is the subject of the true crime documentary, The Vow. Created in 1998, NXIVM and its shockingly vile dealings were exposed to the world in 2019; thus, ending its decades-long of abuse and manipulation, twistedly justified by the false guise of making a better world.

Season 1 of The Vow, which was released in 2020, only scratches the surface. Unpacking NXIVM’s manipulations for decades and the horrifying deeds it perpetuated are too massive of a horror to endure, but must be exposed nonetheless. With this, The Vow TV series returns for Part Two to further expose the organisation that flourished through deceit and downright wickedness.

The Vow Part 2 preview

The Vow revolves around members of the self- improvement group, NXIVM, led by Keith Raniere. These members are mostly actors and children of the rich and powerful. Founded as a multi-level marketing company who used such a business model to recruit new members, NXIVM was split into subgroups that practiced sexual abuse and master-slave hierarchies. The company was entirely exposed as a cult and Raniere was convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, as well as forced labor and wire fraud, among other crimes.

The first part of the docuseries revolved around former members, while the second part focuses on the legal aspects involving NXIVM leaders, particularly the federal trial of Raniere. He was sentenced to 120 years in prison. More than covering Raniere’s trial in Season 2, the docuseries also examines his inner circle and loyal supporters, and their face-off with whistleblowers and prosecutors. NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman is also set to appear for Part Two.

The Vow TV series: Part 1 recap

The first part of the documentary series focuses on members who left the group and the emotional toll that being a part of a “sex cult” has cost them. Former NXIVM members Sarah Edmondson, Mark Vicente, Bonnie Piesse, Anthony “Nippy” Ames, Susan Dones, Toni Natalie and former board member Barbara Bouchey all appear in the first season.

Their efforts to expose the alarming practices at NXIVM, including the existence of a secret group that brand women to become “slaves”, are also explored. Initially, they fail to get the attention of the authorities, prompting them to contact news outlets with the goal of sparking outrage and pressure law enforcement to take action.

Chronicling the emotional journey of former members, The Vow also introduces married couple Mark Vicente and Bonnie Piesse. Having suspicions about the organisation, Bonnie leaves NXIVM while Mark remains loyal to the group and its leader, threatening their relationship. Now they’re two of NXIVM’s most vocal detractors.
