The Patient is a limited series, created and written by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the executive producers of The Americans, following a therapist who must both confront and help a serial killer repress his urges to kill.
Featuring a stellar line-up of cast headlined by Steve Carell as captured therapist Alan Strauss and Domhnall Gleeson as serial killer Sam Fortner, their actors’ performances alone in this gripping psychological thriller make The Patient’s therapy sessions worth delving into.

The Patient TV show preview
The Patient follows Dr. Alan Strauss, a therapist mourning the death of his wife, as he takes on an enigmatic new client with a mysterious past, Sam. Only his new patient has an unusual request – help him curb his homicidal urges, which results in the doctor being held prisoner.
To begin their professional relationship, Sam honors the promise Dr. Strauss made him make as a condition for their continuous work together – not kill again and attend his regular therapy sessions. But for how long?
In order to survive, Alan must pacify Sam’s disturbed mind to stop him from killing again, all the while digging his way through his own memories to confront his own personal troubles. He revisits his past choices with his old therapist, Charlie (introduced in The Patient Episode 6), who serves as the manifestation of Alan’s past memories and own therapeutic experience.
While Dr. Strauss struggles to keep it together, his sessions with Sam, and even his desperate attempt to make sense of his situation by talking to Charlie, somehow helps him gain clarity about his own troubled life. However, this doesn’t mean that he can leave anytime soon. When a setback in his relationship with his patient occurs, Sam loses faith in his doctor, threatening their arrangement and Alan’s own life.
With each episode, both men strive to make new connections in their pursuit of an elusive peace in their lives, but at what cost? Will they be able to find the solace they seek, or will their personal demons consume them?
