Named after our own Rod Laver, the Laver Cup is a global celebration of men’s tennis – as representation from Europe and the Rest of the World face off in a team competition. The Laver Cup 2022 will be the fifth tournament in the series and will be held at the O2 Arena in London, on the indoor hard courts in late September.
Laver Cup 2022 Preview
Team Europe has dominated the competition having won each tournament since its inception in 2017. Bjorn Borg as the European team captain has continually had the better of his long-time foe (now friend), John McEnroe; especially in the last event in 2021 when Borg’s European outfit obliterated the ROW contingent 14-1.
Nick Kyrgios has been a mainstay of the ROW side since the first competition; tying the record for most appearances in the competition. He’s often partnered with the American, Jack Sock and won several Laver Cup doubles matches with him. Kyrgios has yet to confirm his attendance at the 2022 tournament, however.
Despite sitting out since the summer of 2021, Roger Federer, the iconic Swiss superman of tennis has announced he will play the Laver Cup in some capacity – despite missing all of 2022 including the Grand Slam in Wimbledon. He’ll partner with his long-time adversary and fellow GOAT nominee, Rafael Nadal. Seriously, this could be the ultimate doubles team – don’t expect long games if these two partner up.
On the other side, John McEnroe has enlisted Félix Auger-Aliassime and Diego Schwartzman for their second Laver Cup appearances, as well as the American, Taylor Fritz who makes his competition debut. McEnroe would be wise to add an Aussie or two with the likes of James Duckworth and Thanasi Kokkinakis both climbing the ATP rankings. Or recalling Kyrgios would surely add necessary experience.
Laver Cup 2022 schedule (AEST Time)
The Laver Cup is split up into six sessions from the 23rd of September to the 25th, with day and evening sessions across the three days. As the competition is in London, there’s a fair time difference to consider with the earlier sessions not starting here until 10:00 PM AEST and then the later games on in the middle of the night at 4:00 AM AEST. This makes for a late schedule for any tennis fan here in Australia.

Laver Cup 2022 Teams
The 2022 teams aren’t fully confirmed yet, but those who have committed to their participation should do enough to excite any ardent or casual tennis fan…
Team Europe
Despite battling over all-time GOAT supremacy on the tennis court. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will team up to represent Europe. With 42 grand slam wins between them, is there a more formidable-looking doubles partnership?
Nadal has been a lot more active in 2022 having won the Australian Open and French Open earlier in the year, as well as playing an active part of the ATP tour, notably winning the 500 tournament in Mexico.
Federer has been suffering from injuries for the last few years with several unsuccessful returns leading to him extending his time out on the side-lines. The 40-year-old has previously signalled that he will return to full-time tennis for the 2023 season; therefore is planning to use this Laver Cup as a test for his recovery status. Whatever part he plays in the tournament, fans will be aching to see Federer serve and volley again after nearly two years out.
Team Rest of the World
John McEnroe will be itching to get his ROW team off the mark for Laver Cup victories having remarkably lost every edition thus far. The American captain has decided to call upon two prior Laver Cup participants in the form of Félix Auger-Aliassime and Diego Schwartzman; in addition to tournament debutant, Taylor Fritz.
