In the spring of 1972, a group of police raided an apartment on Chicago’s South Side, arresting and charging seven women who were part of a secret organisation. The accused had developed an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions by using code names, fronts, and safe houses to hide themselves and their operation. They introduced themselves as “Jane.”
The women of “Jane”, also called The Jane Collective, risked everything to support women who had nowhere else to go. During a time when outlawed abortion stripped women of their reproductive rights, it was them who faced threats and dangers as they challenged unjust laws. Now their stories are the subject of an upcoming docufilm, which you can stream in Australia this month. Find out how and where to watch The Janes documentary using this guide.

The Janes documentary preview
The Janes depicts the true-to-life story of unconventional outlaws that support women with unwanted pregnancies. Members of Jane risked their personal and professional lives to aid women in need, opposing the state government that prohibited abortion, the Catholic Church that denounced it, and the Chicago Mob who profited from it.
During the pre-Roe v. Wade era, when abortion was illegal in most states and even discussing abortion was a felony in Illinois, the Janes built an underground service and offered low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11,000 women.
The film features testimonies from the women who received abortions from the clandestine network and the women at the center of “Jane,” including Heather Booth, Eleanor Oliver, Marie Leaner, Judith Arcana Diane Stevens, and others, as well as reflections from doctors, lawyers, and others who mirror on the era, including a man who performed the abortions who later taught The Janes how to perform the procedures themselves.
The Janes, directed by Oscar contender Tia Lessin and Emmy nominee Emma Pildes, is one of those HBO documentary films that delivers first-hand testimonies from the women at the heart of the organisation, many of whom are going on the record for the first time.
Pildes was previously nominated for an Emmy for her work on the films Jane Fonda in Five Acts (2019) and Spielberg (2018). Lessin has gotten two Emmy nominations for the satirical series The Awful Truth (1999) and an Oscar nomination for the project Trouble the Water (2009).
