New BBC dark comedy-drama The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies will premiere in Australia later this month. It follows two very different women who share the same unfortunate entanglement – conman Rob Chance, a sociopath who pulls off his schemes with repulsive flair.
Also tackling the proliferation of fraud, this new series from sibling writers Penelope and Ginny Skinner explores deception and people’s tendency to fall for it; people hounded by loneliness, grief or insecurities that is, which con artists like Chance treats like a mecca of opportunity.

Alice (Rebekah Staton) was married to Rob (Alistair Petrie) many years ago, until he disappeared without a trace. Disappearing alongside her shady husband was all her money and her parents’ retirement fund.
After much heartbreak and eventual rage, Alice is given the golden chance to strike vengeance when she crosses paths with her supposedly missing husband, now pretending to be an academic with his eyes set on a new target, successful author Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste).
What happens next is the further discovery of lies of epic proportions and more ruined lives at the hands of an eccentric and celebrated ecopreneur and conman. Described by critics as an unpredictable thriller, it also highlights how these two women develop an unexpected friendship in their efforts to expose the truth and bring their common nemesis down once and for all.
Series creators Penelope and Ginny Skinner also serve as executive producers for the show, alongside Naomi de Pear, Lydia Hampson, Alice Tyler, and Jo McClellan.
