Fifty years after the first film was released, a direct sequel to 1973’s The Exorcist is finally happening. Titled The Exorcist Believer, Ellen Burstyn, who played Regan’s mother in the original film, returns to reprise her role as Chris MacNeil.
Believer, finally out on streaming in May, revolves around a single father whose young daughter shows signs of demonic possession. Only getting worse and terrified of what might happen next, he reaches out to the only person alive who might know how to stop evil from spreading.

What is The Exorcist: Believer about?
After losing his pregnant wife to a tragic disaster 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar-nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. Surviving the grief brought by the tragedy, he’s somewhat created an idyllic life as a single father.
However, his worst nightmare comes to life when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods. They return three days later with no recollection of what happened.
While relieved that her daughter and her friend are safe, their return also marks the beginning of a nightmarish experience. As Angela begins displaying disturbing behaviour of that of a possessed child, the chain of events that follow force Victor to face a mysterious demonic entity in a battle he’s too terrified to fight alone.
Enter Chris MacNeil, a parent who has also experienced the very same evil many years ago with her daughter Regan (played by Linda Blair in the original Exorcist film).
From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, best known for resurrecting the Halloween franchise, The Exorcist Believer is the first film in the new The Exorcist trilogy. David C. and James G. Robinson also serve as producers through Morgan Creek Entertainment.
