The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson, a bold reimagining of the classic Henry Lawson’s short story and Leah Purcell’s acclaimed play, finally arrives on streaming TV. It’s worth noting that the movie version saw a major departure from Lawson’s original story with Purcell heavily incorporating her own experiences and ancestral history.
While Lawson’s short story is now told from an Indigenous feminist lens, we’ll still see his characters during a time when Australians struggled to survive in its harsh landscapes, even more so when plagued with racism and misogyny. Acclaimed for Leah Purcell’s writing, directing, and acting, here’s how you can watch the film online.
What’s in this Guide?
The Drover’s Wife preview
This feature film opens with Molly Johnson (Leah Purcell) shooting a bull that crosses their property while being heavily pregnant. With her drover husband away, Molly and their children are left alone in the remote location of Snowy Mountains. But the mother of four is far from scared as she does everything in her power to protect her family’s farm and children from danger.
One strange morning, Molly wakes up with a stranger on her doorstep: an Indigenous Australian convict who had escaped prison. Wounded, Yadaka (Rob Collins) and Molly form an unlikely bond that the society around them will soon test.
Meanwhile, a new sheriff is assigned in town. While still adjusting to his new environment, he soon discovers that Molly Johnson’s husband is missing. He then sends his men to investigate. As the story progresses, the film also explores the stories of Australia’s colonial era, painting vivid pictures of a reality that’s laced with unjust norms.
Acclaimed for its acting, cinematography, and emotional grit, Purcell already recreated Henry Lawson’s short story to be an award-winning theatre play back in 2016, which then became a movie that will soon grace your streaming screens.
