The Dropout preview

Executive producer Elizabeth Meriwether brings to life the unbelievable story of Elizabeth Holmes, the enigmatic Stanford dropout, and her blood testing startup, Theranos. At the centre of it all is Amanda Seyfried’s stunning performance as Holmes, the Stanford dropout who was once hailed as the next Steve Jobs for the next tech generation and a self-made female billionaire.

As the series progresses, we follow the journey of Holmes as she attempts to revolutionise the healthcare industry after dropping out of college and starting her technology company. To raise money to fund her startup, Elizabeth brings her fledgling technology to the venture capitalists of Silicon Valley, but even as partnerships are formed and deals are secured, Elizabeth’s technology struggles begin to unravel.

We then see how Holmes’ ambition and fame led to the downfall of her company and the revelation of shocking truths that exposed thousands of people’s health in grave danger. Theranos’ myth crumbled when it was revealed that none of their technology actually worked, exposing the deceptive practices that had allowed the company to thrive.

As Theranos rapidly expands, and the pressure to deliver on her promises mounts, Elizabeth is forced to make a difficult decision while in Switzerland. Meanwhile, back in the US, she entices Walgreens to seal a new partnership with Theranos, and her colleague Ian tries to investigate what’s going on behind closed doors.

With the Walgreens deadline looming, and members of the board become increasingly wary of her secretive behaviour, Elizabeth scrambles to find solutions to the company’s technological mishaps, while Ian is drawn into Elizabeth’s lawsuit against Richard, the Holmes’ former family friend.

Tyler Schultz and Erika Cheung, fresh out of college and newly employed by Theranos, face a moral dilemma as they make appalling discoveries about Elizabeth and the company. And so, throughout the series, viewers get to witness the unraveling of Elizabeth’s empire and the shocking revelations about her company’s fraudulent practices that led to its ultimate demise.
