In this new political thriller, Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders, Gentleman Jack) stars as British diplomat Laura Simmonds. Working at the British Consulate in Barcelona alongside her colleague and friend Alba Ortiz, her time in the city mostly revolves around helping British nationals who find themselves in dire straits. However, these troubles escalate into a full-scale peril sometimes, forcing Simmonds to channel her inner heroine self.

What’s in this Guide?

The Diplomat TV series preview

The series follows Laura, a diplomat who works at the British Consulate in Barcelona with her colleagues Alba (Serena Manteghi), Carl (Dylan Brady), and new boss Sam (Steven Cree). Working hard to protect distressed British nationals in the Spanish city, Laura and Alba’s diplomatic skills are stretched to the limit as they function as a lawyer, counsellor, and even a detective all at once.

With so many predicaments to resolve and incidents to deal with, Laura and her colleagues spread themselves too thin. Everyday, they tirelessly assist tourists that need their help, from lost passports, muggings, abductions, and domestic violence, they resolve these issues at the expense of their own safety.

While Laura and her team encounter new cases each week, The Diplomat adds another layer of mystery by incorporating a long-running storyline, which follows the death of a young British barman working on a yacht. Initially believed as an unfortunate accident by the Spanish police, his father thinks otherwise. Soon Laura and Alba discover evidence linking the young man’s death to organised crime and the British security services.

The series starring Sophie Rundle is created by Ben Richards with Jill Robertson and Jenny Paddon serving as directors. It is produced by BBC Studios and World Productions for British pay TV channel Alibi.
