The rise and fall of the online dating website, Ashley Madison, is the subject of the new documentary series The Ashley Madison Affair, coming to your streaming screens in July. The infidelity dating website was hacked in 2015 by a group called the Impact Team, demanding that the website be shut down and threatening to release customer information and profiles. The owners refused to do so, resulting in one of the most scandalous data breaches that also exposed high-profile personalities.

What’s in this Guide?

The Ashley Madison Affair preview

The new Hulu original documentary delves deeper into the hack of Ashley Madison, a dating site that facilitates extramarital affairs for married people. It all started when the Impact Team hacked into the site back in 2015, publicly releasing significant gigabytes of Ashley Madison users and their sensitive data, which included names, home addresses, search history, and credit card transactions. The ultimate goal: destroy Ashley Madison for good.

For customers who used the site and were expecting discretion and the protection of their private information, the results were disastrous as they faced blackmail and public shaming. Two individuals associated with the Ashley Madison leak were also reported to have taken their lives, according to police in Canada.

The scandalous data breach changed the lives of those involved forever, and so ABC News Studios and Wall to Wall Media joined forces to produce an in-depth documentary exploring the hack and its ramifications. Featuring exclusive footage and firsthand interviews, it will examine infidelity, morality, and cyber-shaming.

Focusing on the lives of some users and every reputation destroyed, The Ashley Madison Affair will also tell the story of regular people with big sexual secrets to hide and how the website’s hack continues to be a mystery that remains unsolved to this day. The controversial dating website was not only hit hard by the data breach, it was also lambasted for creating fake accounts and supposedly luring users with fake profiles.

Even more shocking, the hack of Ashley Madison reveals that the users aren’t the only ones with dirty secrets as the company itself suffers greatly from the inside. As online dating takes off, Ashley Madison, a dating site aimed at marriage cheats breaks all the rules and ignores countless public pleas. Its meteoric rise could be largely attributed to outrageous viral marketing and shameless celebrity take downs led by its now former CEO Noel Biderman.

The three-episode documentary is executive produced by Beth Hoppe for ABC News Studios and Jeremy Dear and Fred Hepburn from Wall to Wall Media, while Shaun Trevisick and Carla Francome serve as producers. Johanna Hamilton joins production as the series director.
