Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings preview
In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it was revealed that the shadowy terrorist group was founded thousands of years ago by Xu Wenwu. Granting him immense powers, including immortality, he created the Ten Rings organisation.
Throughout history, they’ve conquered kingdoms and overthrown governments, intent on creating a world that suits their twisted ideologies. As his role in shaping world history became less and less conspicuous, only operating in the shadows as time went by, Wenwu became a legend.
Wenwu disbands his organisation and locks away the ten rings when he falls in love with Ying Li, the guardian of a village said to be protected by mythical beasts. They marry and have two children – Shang-Chi and Xialing. The death of their mother by the hands of Wenwu’s enemies, the Iron Gang, pushes their grieving father into a downward spiral of vengeance, wearing the ten rings again and resuming his leadership of the group.
Shang-Chi is forced to undergo brutal training and by the time he turns 14, he is sent to assassinate the Iron Gang’s leader. Traumatised and unwilling to inflict more deaths, he escapes and settles in San Francisco and changes his name to “Shaun”.
Thinking he can leave his past behind, Shang-Chi’s new life is threatened when his father and the Ten Rings bring him back. In the end, the father and the son must confront the pains of the past, as well as stand alongside each other to battle an ancient, nefarious foe.
One of the highest-grossing action movies last year, Shang-Chi is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (The Glass Castle, Just Mercy) from a screenplay he co-wrote with David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Mortal Kombat) and Andrew Lanham (The Shack).
