Scenes from a Marriage HBO preview
Ingmar Bergman wrote and directed Scenes from a Marriage (Scener ur ett äktenskap), a Swedish television miniseries starring Erland Josephson and Liv Ullmann as Johan and Marianne, in 1973. The original master cinematographer of the show was Sven Nykvist.
The narrative follows Marianne (Liv Ullmann), a family lawyer who specializes in divorce, and Johan (Erland Josephson), an associate professor of psychology, as their marriage falls apart. The teleplay is based on Ingmar Bergman’s personal experiences, especially his relationship with Liv Ullmann, to whom he was married to from 1965 to 1970. In 1972, it was filmed on a shoestring budget in Stockholm and Fårö.
The miniseries was reduced into a cinematic format after it first aired on Swedish television in six parts and garnered stellar reviews in Sweden and all across the globe. Scenes from a Marriage sparked debate because of its alleged effect on Europe’s growing divorce rates, but still performed well at the box office.
While the Swedish box office movie did not qualify for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, it did win the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and other awards in cinema. It became one of the most talked-about and must-watch films of that decade.
At the beginning of the original series, the viewers are introduced to the couples Marianne, Johan, Katarina, Peter – Marianne and Johan just renewed their marriage contract, while Katarina and Peter are another married couple who have a miserable relationship.
The original story explores the disintegration of a relationship between a married couple in the span of 10 years. It was acclaimed for its compelling dialogue and realistic human portrayals, as well as Bergman’s screenplay and directing. In HBO’s remake, the original story and its iconic and even controversial depiction of love, ups and downs in a relationship, desire, monogamy and affair, marriage, and ultimately, divorce, will be revisited by a contemporary couple going through a rough patch in their marriage.
Oscar Isaac (Star Wars, Ex-Machina) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Molly’s Game) will portray the modern-day versions of the couple Johan and Marianne. Filming and production of the series began last year, which is is co-created, written, and directed by Hagai Levi. Levi is also the co-creator and writer of the award-winning series The Affair, which also examined the psychological and emotional forces at play in a marriage.
Executive producers include Chastain, Isaac, Hagai Levi, Amy Herzog, Michael Ellenberg, Lars Blomgren, Daniel Bergman, and Blair Breard. Michelle Williams was originally set to play the role that Liv Ullmann played in the original series, but stepped out due to a scheduling conflict. The upcoming HBO miniseries will be Chastain’s first major role on television ever since pursuing a career mostly in film.
