In the Samaritan 2022 movie, Sylvester Stallone plays a superhero believed to have died 20 years ago after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Living an ordinary life as Joe Smith, his young neighbour, Sam Cleary, suspects him to be the once-famed vigilante. While the young boy eventually confirms his suspicion, Samaritan has no plans to get back into action – at least not yet. With crime on the rise and his city on the verge of destruction, he knows he needs to put the mask back on.

Sylvester Stallone’s new film follows the story of Samaritan, a superhero legend hiding in plain sight after he was reported dead two decades ago. Meanwhile, 13-year old Sam Cleary begins suspecting that his reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith is actually the superhero himself after seeing him fight off his attackers.
With crimes in the city increasing at an alarming rate, Sam makes it his mission to convince his already fed-up neighbour to save the day. Unlike many superhero films, Samaritan is a darker but fresher take on the superhero genre, while still highlighting the epic battle between good and evil. It was initially written as a spec script and was later adapted into graphic novels published in 2014 by Mythos Comics.
In 2019, it was announced that MGM had acquired the rights to the spec script alongside Stallone’s Balboa Productions. Later that year, Julius Avery was hired as the film’s director with Sylvester Stallone playing the lead role and also serving as producer. Samaritan was originally scheduled for a theatrical release back in 2020, but Amazon’s purchase of MGM Studios led to the film dropping on Amazon’s streaming service instead.
