HBO’s 2020 big hitter has arrived in the shape of Perry Mason, a name many of us are familiar with thanks to author Erle Stanley Gardner. Although the screen and novel versions of Perry are much more different than you would expect, they do have one thing in common – an unwavering commitment to justice. Starring Matthew Rhys as the titular character, the second season of the new Perry Mason TV series is now available to stream on demand. Perry Mason Season 2 preview
This version of Perry Mason is somewhat of a prequel to the confident lawyer portrayed in Stanley Gardner’s books as the new series explores Mason’s origin story as a private investigator. Set in 1932 when the Great Depression was at its peak, Mason has returned from the first World War a changed man, tortured by memories of the trenches and coming to terms with being separated from his estranged wife and son.
The first season follows a kidnapping that goes wrong, resulting in the death of a baby. The case has Perry drawn in, becoming somewhat of a self-taught detective while he navigates Los Angeles’ legal system. Working alongside a lawyer’s assistant and private investigator, he discovers an ugly underworld that is poisoning society through power, greed and corruption.
In Season 2, months after the Dodson case, Mason returns with a new baffling case to tackle. A successor of a powerful oil family has been murdered and the DA is coming after the most obvious suspects. However, Mason, along with legal secretary Della Street and beat cop Paul Drake, have something else in mind. As the circumstances surrounding the case become trickier, Mason, Street, and Drake find themselves at the centre of an investigation that will expose a darker conspiracy, forcing them to reckon with the complexities of truth.
In addition to main stars Matthew Rhys, Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk, the new season introduces new starring characters to be played by Shea Whigham, Eric Lange, Justin Kirk, Diarra Kilpatrick, Katherine Waterston, and Hope Davis, among others.
