Doctor Who actress Jodie Whittaker is starring alongside local talents Nicole da Silva (Wentworth) and Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black) in Paramount’s upcoming Australian original series, One Night. A mystery thriller revolving around three women with a traumatic past, the series is described as a “character-driven mystery about female friendships” put to the test by events that deeply scarred them twenty years ago. Now they must relive that ‘one night’ when one of them writes a book about it.

One Night TV series preview
One Night follows three women whose friendship was shattered by the disturbing events of one night twenty years ago. At the centre is Simone (Da Silva), who has long aspired to become a novelist. When most of her writing attempts didn’t pan out the way she hoped they would, she decided to finally write that one story so powerful and haunting it’s impossible to get it out of her head. To her surprise, it has become an unexpected overnight success, cementing her literary career.
But the devastating story she tells in her book is not hers alone; the tragedy also happened to her two childhood best friends Tess (Whittaker) and Hat (Stone). As the line between fact and fiction becomes dangerously blurry, revisiting the past through one person’s memory and events from another’s, the book threatens to destroy all their friendships for good. These old traumas are once again set ablaze in the small coastal community where they grew up, stirring its aggressors who only want to bury the past.
Set against the backdrop of the New South Wales coastline, One Night is produced by Ian Collie, Rob Gibson, and Ally Henville from Easy Tiger, alongside Motive Pictures’ Simon Maxwell. Sophia Mogford from Paramount+ serves as executive producer with Harriet Creelman.
Writer Emily Ballou, whose beautifully observed character writing and strong insights into its very relevant themes are always present in her work, is also executive producer. One Night is a new addition to Paramount+’s growing list of originals as part of the service’s goal for creating fresh Australian dramas.
