My Old School documentary preview
My Old School documentary explores the incredible true story of Brandon Lee, Scotland’s most infamous imposter. Posing as a 16-year-old under the name Brandon Lee, Brian MacKinnon enrolled at Glasgow’s Bearsden Academy, a prestigious secondary school, where he, a preternaturally bright student, surprised everyone with his prodigious intellect.
He even has a backstory of being privately tutored in Canada while he accompanied his mother, an opera diva, on tour before her tragic death. And despite his initial awkwardness, Brandon found friends and became a beloved member of the school community, offering support and guidance to bullied students, introduced classmates to seminal retro bands, and showcased his talents by taking on a leading role in the school’s production of South Pacific.
Brian MacKinnon manages to almost get away with it entirely, even entering medical school at Dundee University. However, everything changed when Brandon’s unbelievable secret was revealed. Filmmaker Jono McLeod, Brandon’s former classmate, returns to his old school to investigate the strange and fascinating tale of his former friend. The film utilises period specific animation, pitch perfect soundtrack, and the recollections of students and teachers.
My Old School is a captivating look at an incredible strange but true story that offers more than one surprise along the way. It is a testament to the power of charisma, intelligence, and the desire to fit in, as well as a reminder that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
