The last queen of France before the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, is the subject of the new historical drama, the Marie Antoinette TV series. It explores her life when she became Dauphine of France upon her marriage to Louis-Auguste, the heir apparent to the French throne. When her husband ascended the throne as Louis XVI, she became Queen.
But her story isn’t one that revels in happy endings and charming romances. Shaking up the French court with her defiant stance, she became a controversial figure and this new series from France’s Canal+ offers a fresh insight into the intriguing life of the young queen.
What’s in this Guide?
Marie Antoinette TV series preview
Marie Antoinette’s story begins in Austria where she was born. The youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I, she left Austria at age 14 to marry the future King of France.
When her husband became King, she was under pressure to produce an heir and continue the Bourbon line, which was hard to accomplish with the King’s refusal to consummate their marriage. Her rebellious ways also made her a notorious figure, questioning the court’s customs which further sent the royal family in disarray.
From being a stubborn young princess navigating the ins and outs of the French court to being a true fashion icon that recreated life at the Versailles court, all the while attracting a number of enemies, this eight part series offers a feminist take on Marie Antoinette’s life.
Emilia Schüle portrays the titular character in this historic drama from the French network, Canal+, created by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Deborah Davis (The Favorite). It’s produced by Banijay Studios France, CAPA Drama and Les Gens with international rights already sold in other territories.
