After the success of their 2018 docufilm Spitfire, David Fairhead and Ant Palmer grace the screen this year with the new Lancaster documentary, which tells the story of the iconic World War II bomber. Revisiting the horrors it saw during the war, the last surviving crew members are interviewed in the film to share their harrowing experiences during one of the darkest parts of our history.
Narrated by Game of Thrones’ actor Charles Dance, Lancaster is neither a documentary that promotes patriotism nor a film that lavishes on themes celebrating the triumphs of war. Instead, it’s a story that centres on bravery, fear, friendship and the moral repercussions of war.
What’s in this Guide?
Lancaster documentary preview
Lancaster was an iconic WW2 bomber, flown by young men during the war to transport tens of thousands of soldiers right into battles. Becoming RAF’s most successful heavy bomber, the Lancaster had a crucial role that helped turn the tide of World War II in the Allies’ favour.
The bomber was responsible for some of the most famous and notorious missions in WW2 history, including the Dambuster raids and the controversial bombing of Dresden. But there’s always a deadly price to pay when countries are at war. During the Second World War, 55,000 young men, half of the aircrew of Bomber Command, lost their lives while fighting in the Nazi-occupied Europe.
As Lancaster tells its story from both perspectives, a German woman is also interviewed to talk about the terrors she witnessed as a child when Dresden was bombed. The veterans themselves have to live with debilitating guilt for what they had inflicted on civilians below.
So while the documentary may be initially seen as a movie for world war buffs or aviation aficionados, it’s really more about the lasting impact of war on those who had seen and lived it, something that stays with them forever. “War’s a dirty business, isn’t it,” one of the veterans interviewed for the documentary said.
More than emotional interviews, archive material that’s been remastered, as well as extraordinary aerial footage of the Royal Air Force’s last airworthy Lancaster, have also been included to allow us to further immerse in the film.
