M. Night Shyamalan is back with another gripping mystery film with Knock at the Cabin. Taking another shot at the apocalypse genre, his latest horror offering is based on Paul G. Tremblay’s 2018 novel, The Cabin at the End of the World. It follows a family vacationing at a remote cabin, only to be held hostage by four armed strangers, asking them to do the impossible to save the world.
What’s in this Guide?
Knock at the Cabin plot
A young girl, Wen (Kristen Cui), is vacationing at a remote cabin in rural Pennsylvania with her adoptive fathers, Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge). She then meets Leonard (Dave Bautista), who tells her that she and her parents must avert the impending apocalypse. Three other people emerged equipped with makeshift weapons, frightening Wen.
The four strangers manage to break into their cabin, holding them hostage and claiming they’ve been having visions of the world ending, eventually leading them to the family. Leonard and his companions – Sabrina, Adriane, and Redmond – believe that the family must make an unthinkable choice in order to save the world. If not, “oceans will rise, a pandemic will spread, and the sky will fall”.
Eric and Andrew, shocked and confused, perceive the attack as a product of hate and delusions, refusing to believe their claims of apocalypse. Much to their horror, the reports on television seem to be saying otherwise. But with limited access to the outside world, must they really trust a group of strangers asking them to do something unimaginable?
Knock at the Cabin is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who also co-wrote the script with Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman. Shyamalan is best known for his work in the horror and thriller genre with his trademark the “Shyamalan twist”, which we first saw in his first film The Sixth Sense.
The film starring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Ben Aldridge is a collaboration between production companies Universal Pictures, Blinding Edge Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and Wishmore Entertainment with Universal distributing internationally.
