King Charles’ coronation, the first coronation of a British monarch in the 21st century, is just around the corner. Next week, the royal event that the world will want to witness is finally happening and we’ll get to see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside his wife Camilla, The Queen Consort.
The royal coronation is an event of historic magnitude, just like the late Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation 70 years ago in 1953. Taking place at long last on May 6, the ceremony is set to break records. Fortunately, it will be televised and can be watched live in Australia.
What’s in this Guide?
King Charles III’s coronation ceremony
Charles was proclaimed king by the Accession Council of the United Kingdom on 10 September 2022 after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022. On Saturday, 6 May 2023, he will be crowned king at Westminster Abbey. The historic crowning will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at 11am in the UK, or 8pm AEST for those watching from Australia.
The King’s Procession from Buckingham Palace, however, will commence a little earlier, with King Charles and Queen Camilla travelling to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. After this, The King and the Queen Consort, as well as other members of the royal family, will return to Buckingham Palace for the much larger The Coronation Procession.
During the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, Charles and Camilla will be anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop. The King will then be formally crowned with St. Edward’s crown placed on his head, and sit in the Coronation Chair known as Edward’s Chair.
The Coronation will also be a star-studded event with members of the Royal Family taking part in the ceremony, including Prince William, Princess Catherine and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Buckingham Palace has also confirmed that Prince Harry will attend the coronation ceremony, but his wife Meghan Markle and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will remain in California.
