Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, which hit Australian theatres last May, finally makes its streaming debut on Disney Plus in August. The second-highest grossing film of 2023 so far (behind The Super Mario Bros Movie), grossing over $840 million at the box office, the third film follows the emotional journey of MCU’s most ragtag family still reeling from the loss of Gamora.
This time, Peter Quill must rally his team to save Rocket’s life from the dangers of his past. Unable to bear another loss in the family, Quill has to ensure their mission is successful, else the beloved band of misfits’ fate are changed forever and possibly lead to the Guardians’ end.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 plot
In Volume 3, we see the Guardians of the Galaxy settling at their new headquarters on Knowhere. Tragedy strikes once again when a Sovereign warrior attacks and critically injures Rocket, whose life now hangs in the balance. Unable to save him because of the kill switch embedded into him by his creator, the High Evolutionary and the company he created Orgocorp, the team must travel to its headquarters, override the switch, and save Rocket’s life.
The team’s mission to infiltrate Orgocorp ultimately brings us Rocket’s backstory, who, as a baby raccoon, was experimented on by the High Evolutionary. The mad scientist hoped to create a society called Counter Earth with anthropomorphized animals as its inhabitants, but Rocket’s intelligence eventually exceeded his creator’s, infuriating the High Evolutionary and sending him to a darker road paved with obsession and twisted ambition. Helping the Guardians sneak into Orgocorp’s headquarters are the Ravagers led by Gamora.
While Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos’ ultimate sacrifice to get his hands on the Soul Stone, the multiple timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe made it possible for a Gamora variant to return to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 as a part of Ravagers. Together, they confront the High Evolutionary and end his cruelty once and for all.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is directed by James Gunn from a screenplay he also wrote. Most of the franchise’s main cast members all returned to reprise their roles, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Sean Gunn. Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, The Maze Runner) also joins the cast as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker) portrays the High Evolutionary, and Sylvester Stallone as Ravager Stakar Ogord.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 release date
MCU fans have been looking forward to watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on streaming TV following the film’s Australian theatrical release on 4 May 2023. The nearly 90-day gap between releases follows Disney Plus’ trend of longer waiting periods for movies to debut online after being distributed by Walt Disney Studios in cinemas worldwide.
This includes Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, taking just less than 90 days after its theatrical release and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which took about 80 days before it hit streaming.
