Based on James Runcie’s collection of short stories, The Grantchester Mysteries, Grantchester is a long-running British detective drama set in the 1950s. It takes place in the Cambridgeshire village of the same name and follows Anglican vicar Sidney Chambers (James Norton) and Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Despite their unlikely pairing, the duo forms an effective partnership in solving crimes.

James Norton played the vicar with a penchant for sleuthing in the first four seasons, after which Tom Brittney took over the role to portray Chambers’ successor Will Davenport. Now in its seventh season, Grantchester remains to be a top favourite thanks to its intriguing mysteries, well-timed humour, and engaging characters.

What’s in this Guide?

Grantchester TV series plot

Grantchester may appear like an idyllic, quiet village where nothing happens but that’s a far cry from the crimes, mysteries, and intrigue that the community is abuzz with. Enter Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers. When he’s not saving souls and giving his parishioners enlightening advice, he investigates murder and helps apprehend culprits on the side.

Chambers works with Geordie Keating, an overburdened detective inspector whose systematic approach to police work is in contrast with the former’s intuitive techniques. Despite this striking difference, they develop an excellent partnership that’s built on trust, respect, and their resolve to solve baffling crimes, unravelling the dark side of England in the early 1950s.

James Norton’s Sidney Chambers later departed the series after its fourth season, deciding to spread the Lord’s word elsewhere. As he’s known to not waste time and opportunities, he managed to solve a couple more murders with his partner before leaving Grantchester.

Chambers is replaced by Reverend Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney. Not only did Davenport take over Chambers’ parish, he also continued the detective work that his predecessor had started with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating.

Developed by Daisy Coulam from James Runcie’s short story collection, this explosive series tests our crime-solving heroes to the limit, sometimes sending them on a dangerous downward spiral. Nonetheless, Will and Geordie’s compelling partnership and eventual friendship is just what Grantchester needs to solve its mind-boggling crimes.
