Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Michael Shannon (Bullet Train) star in the new limited series, George and Tammy. The six-episode drama revolves around the country music power couple Tammy Wynette and George Jones, as well as their formidable musical career and tumultuous marriage. While the nature of their relationship was complicated at best, it inspired some of the most iconic music of all time.
With their romance spawning notable duets including “We’re Gonna Hold On,” “Golden Ring”, and “Near You,” the music their love story has inspired is a tale worth telling. Dropping in Australia next week, here’s how you can watch the new series on streaming TV.
What’s in this Guide?
George & Tammy preview
The limited drama is based on the book The Three of Us: Growing Up With Tammy and George, written by the former couple’s daughter, Georgette Jones. Tammy Wynette is still considered the “First Lady of Country Music”, thanks to best-selling country singles “I Don’t Wanna Play House”, “D-I-V-O-R-C-E”, and her most successful song, “Stand by Your Man”.
George Jones, on the other hand, was also an integral figure in country music with his song “He Stopped Loving Her Today” widely thought to be the greatest country song of all time. “The Race is On” is another George Jones song that garnered him attention. Their marriage in 1969 led to a musical collaboration, resulting in several number one country singles and a successful touring act.
In addition to Chastain and Shannon, the new series will also star Steve Zahn as Wynette’s final husband and manager George Richey, Walton Goggins as songwriter and Jones collaborator Earl Montgomery, Pat Healy as Wynette’s second husband and collaborator Don Chapel, and David Wilson Barnes as songwriter Billy Sherrill.
Created by Abe Sylvia and directed by John Hillcoat, the epic story about country legends Tammy and George will be available to global audiences via Showtime and Paramount Networks. It was produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Brolin Productions, and Aunt Sylvia’s Moving Picture, just to name a few.
