After the critical success of her directorial debut, Booksmart, Olivia Wilde returns with her second film as director in Don’t Worry Darling. Featuring a stellar ensemble that includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, and Wilde herself, The Stepford Wives-inspired movie follows a housewife living her seemingly best life with her husband in an idyllic company town.

That is until she becomes plagued with hallucinations about another life, leading her to suspect that nothing is what it seems and her perfect life is only the facade of something sinister lurking beneath.

What’s in this Guide?

Don’t Worry Darling plot

Set in the 1950s, this psychological thriller follows Alice and Jack Chambers, a couple who live in an experimental company town housing in Victory, California, which provides the best kind of life for all its residents. The film heavily tackles imbalanced power dynamics:

Men leave for work everyday while their wives stay behind to care for their homes and enjoy the luxuries the town has to offer. As the husbands are involved in a top secret Victory project, their wives are discouraged from asking questions and entering the surrounding dessert where the Victory Headquarters are.

After witnessing some alarming events, Alice begins to suspect that the utopian experimental community they’re living in is hiding disturbing secrets. Aggravating her suspicions, she also starts having hallucinations of another version of her life that just seems too real. Soon, cracks in her idyllic life begin to emerge as she questions the town’s existence and that of its residents.
