Dear Evan Hansen, a film adaptation of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical of the same name is dropping on streaming TV in Australia soon. A coming-of-age drama, it follows a young high school senior diagnosed with social anxiety disorder who wants to be part of and accepted by the world outside his thoughts.
The Toronto International Film Festival marked its theater comeback with the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen released last September 2021. It is directed by Stephen Chbosky, with a screenplay by Steven Levenson, and music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
While Dear Evan Hansen gained mixed reviews with critics pointing out the casting and omission of some original broadway songs to maximise the screen time, the music and the timely relevance of its message still makes the movie a must-watch. You can see the film for yourself when it premieres on streaming TV next month. Ahead of its launch, find out how to watch Dear Evan Hansen in Australia using this guide here.

Dear Evan Hansen movie preview
The Dear Evan Hansen movie, a screen adaptation of the Tony and Grammy award-winning musical, tells the story of an isolated high schooler aching and finding his way in life despite feeling unheard and unseen by the people around him.
Evan Hansen, played by Ben Platt, is suffering from a severe social anxiety disorder and the therapist suggests Evan write an affirmative note for himself which contains his feelings for Zoe Murphy (Kaitlyn Denver). The letter, however, is taken by Connor Murphy (Danny Pino), Zoe’s brother, which was still in his possession when he commits suicide.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Evan Hansen faces Connor’s parents, Larry Murphy (Colton Ryan) and Cynthia Murphy (Amy Adams) at the school principal’s office. They mistakenly believe his letter to be Connor’s suicide note and Evan becomes too anxious to admit that it was his, a letter he wrote for himself.
The story starts to unfold as Evan Hansen writes and sews a web of stories that he and Connor were indeed best of friends. Connor’s family then starts to invite him over dinner, leading for him to feel connected to them. Since Evan’s mother, Heidi Hansen (Julianne Moore), is so occupied with her work, he starts to find comfort with Connor Murphy’s family.
One lie begets another. When he gives a speech about his solitude and his friendship with Connor, he ends up inspiring many others who struggle with their mental health. This video, which is built on his lies, becomes viral. But as a result, he finally gets the friends and family he’s always wanted and finally feels a sense of belongingness amid the lies he’s tailored for his own benefit.
But how will Evan Hansen tell the truth? That all of it was just a big play he created in his head; that he created those false memories in his fear to face the truth? You can find it out as this film adaptation premieres on streaming TV in Australia this June.
