With the latest Creed 3 currently the fourth-highest grossing film of 2023, now is the best time to catch up on the previous Creed movies – Creed (2015) and Creed II (2018). The first film was such a phenomenal hit that the Rocky franchise was brought back into the spotlight. The second movie was just as successful, dominating the box office and garnering critical acclaim. The saga then continues with Creed III recently hitting the big screen. This time, lead star Michael B. Jordan directs the third film himself in his directorial debut.
Since it’s been years since the previous Creed movies were released, fans might want to watch Creed and Creed II again before heading to the theatre to watch the 2023 sequel. Luckily, Amazon Prime Video offers both movies for streaming on demand, as well as the complete Rocky film franchise.
What’s in this Guide?
Creed movies preview
A spin-off of the Rocky series, Creed follows amateur boxer Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, son of heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Donnie may not know his father as he died before he was born, but it’s apparent that boxing is in his blood. Adamant to pursue a professional boxing career, he quits his job and seeks out another legendary former heavyweight champion himself, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone).
With Rocky serving as a trainer and mentor to the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed, the stage was set for the original Rocky series making a comeback. As for Donnie, training with Rocky helps him unleash his inner warrior while he learns more about his late father. And in his make or break fight with the world light heavyweight champion “Pretty” Ricky Conlan, Donnie finally uses his father’s name, going from Adonis Johnson to Adonis Creed, a new force to be reckoned with.
Creed III movie (2023)
In Creed 3, Adonis Creed has recently retired from boxing and enjoying life with his family. That is until childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), emerges after his time in prison. His return reignites Donnie’s unresolved guilt about something terrible that happened in the past.
Attempting to free himself from this burden, he agrees to help Damian restart his boxing career. But as the dark past they shared together rears its ugly head, Donnie is left with no choice but to come out of his retirement and fight his former friend once and for all.
Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, and Phylicia Rashad all return to reprise their roles, though it’s worth noting that Sylvester Stallone did not reprise his character as Rocky Balboa in the third Creed movie. Ryan Coogler, who also co-wrote and directed the first Creed film and served as an executive producer on Creed 2, received story credit for Creed 3.
