Not long into the Premier League season and the competition presents one of its deluxe fixtures in the form of this bitter London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Who will take the bragging rights and get the momentum going in their season?
Premier League preview: Chelsea vs Tottenham
These two clubs have the same high ambitions for every season to win several trophies and to play attractive football which garners more supporters. There are more and more parallels between the two clubs every year as Tottenham qualified for the UEFA Champions League this season.
Chelsea: Can Koulibaly and Sterling Elevate the Blues?
Thomas Tuchel has made it apparent he wasn’t happy with just two cup final appearances last season. The German manager clearly saw the third place as an aberration and decided to reinforce the Chelsea roster with Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Raheem Sterling, the latter who arrived after falling out of favour at Manchester City.
This pair alone constitute a net spend of over £80M on incoming transfers and the very real targets for the glory that Chelsea is making for the upcoming season.
Tottenham Hotspur: Extra Dates for the Kane and Son Show
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min aren’t the only two players at Tottenham Hotspur, they are however the most exciting for the club. Spurs owner Daniel Levy and the head coach Antonio Conte (formerly of Chelsea) ensured that the English striker remained at the club despite having submitted an official transfer request not so long ago.
Yet with a great season under the Italian, Kane seems happy and eager to achieve his dreams with Spurs. After all the near-telepathic understanding he has with his South Korean teammate will be hard to replicate at any other club. Should the pair keep up the previous form, there’s no doubt they’ll be challenging for some silverware throughout the season.

Key Players
Chelsea key players
Right-backs haven’t always been the most well-known or glamourous players. However, the likes of Reece James (and Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool) have given the position a great amount of prominence, especially in England. The 22-year-old has been described by Tuchel as a strong leader on the pitch, who will only get better with time.
Another Englishman bearing fruits for Chelsea is Mason Mount. The creative midfielder has been named the Chelsea player of the season for the last two consecutive campaigns. His ball control is one of the best in the entire division, coupled with his ability to continually find the best option to drive the play forward makes him a pivotal member of the Chelsea squad.
Tottenham Hotspur key players
It seldom needs repeating, that Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are the attacking cogs in the Tottenham machine. While it would be harsh to say the team is reliant on the duo, it’s evident that the team isn’t nearly as good when either one isn’t involved.
Two new recruits in North London looking for the stature as the aforementioned pair, is Ivan Perisic and Richarlison. The Croatian has had a distinguished career with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich, picking up eight major honours in the process.
The Brazilian has joined with top-flight experience and has been one of the top performers at Everton. However, after 152 appearances for the club and 53 goals, Richarlison proved himself to be above relegation battle standard and joined Spurs who enjoy a much loftier status.
Other football to watch after the EPL
If you’re a fan of one of these two teams, Optus Sport has the broadcast rights for the Women’s Super League which both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both compete in. Of course, you should know that the pride of the Matildas, Sam Kerr plays for Chelsea – and regularly rips apart opposition defenses. Fellow Aussie, Kyah Simon is on the books at Tottenham too, so there’s a lot of local interest in this WSL matchup.
After that, you can also watch the action from the J.League and the UEFA Nations League.
