The film features an all star cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Banks Repeta, Ryan Sell, Jaylin Webb, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong, and was written, directed, and produced by the acclaimed filmmaker James Gray (The Lost City of Z, Ad Astra).
Drawing inspiration from Gray’s own own past, the movie tells the story of a young Jewish-American boy who forms a bond with an African-American classmate and grapples with his privileged upbringing, inequality, and discrimination. The film was shot in New Jersey and Fresh Meadows, Queens, where Gray and cinematographer Darius Khondji grew up.

Armageddon Time preview
Armageddon Time is a powerful coming-of-age tale that transports viewers to 1980 Queens, New York City. The movie tells the story of Paul Graff, a young Jewish-American boy who befriends an African-American classmate named Johnny on his first day of sixth grade. Despite their differences, the two bond over their shared experiences of discrimination, challenges, and privilege.
While Paul dreams of becoming an artist, his well-meaning but strict parents push him towards a more traditional path, crushing his own aspirations. When Paul and Johnny are caught smoking a joint at school, Paul is expelled and sent to a private school where racism is very much prevalent.
Sick and tired of living under high expectations and pretenses, as well as witnessing the unfair treatment of Johnny, Paul devises a plan to run away with him. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry, and Johnny takes the blame to save Paul from the consequences of their actions.
Earning a Palme d’Or nomination at the Cannes Film Festival, James Gray’s latest film offers a poignant and honest portrayal of growing up in a world still laced with prejudice and features the complexity of friendship and the generational pursuit of the American Dream.
